October Ladder Recap: Stomach And Guts!

At October’s session of the Ladder, scholars learned about all things gastrointestinal, or to put it more simply: stomach, guts and stuff!

digestiveSys

After enjoying lunch and introductions in small groups, medical scholars spent time at three different hands-on learning stations where more senior scholars demonstrated different aspects, functions and dys-functions of the digestive system!

At one station medical scholar Meredith demonstrated the mechanical process of digestion with a couple of activities. First, medical scholars used a Ziplock bag, saltines and orange juice to get an idea of how the stomach turns food we eat into “chyme” that goes onto be processed by the rest of the digestive system. Meredith then demonstrated, using nylons, how the large intestines work to extract water from what’s left of food that makes it past the small intestines!

At another station, medical scholar Shailey walked younger scholars through the process of diagnosing gastrointestinal medical problems like appendicitis, ulcers and colon cancer using scopes, X-rays and CT scan imaging.

At the third station, medical scholars played games and solved puzzles to learn more about the digesting system and processes.

Tell the young scholars in your life, family, school, class and neighborhood about the Ladder – where they can not only develop academic and career goals for their future, but have a whole lot of fun in the process. They will also be actively supported and challenged to pursue their goals by mentors and resources from the University of Minnesota Academic Health Sciences schools & colleges, the North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, and Broadway Family Medicine. In addition, young scholars will be learning along side and supported by peers from their own communities and neighborhoods in North Minneapolis.

The next meeting of the Ladder is Saturday, November 14th (always the second Saturday of the month!) at 12:30pm and open to scholars, parents and supporters agers 9 and older. There’s always learning AND fun – plus free lunch! The next meeting of the Ladder will be at the usual spot – the UROC building (2001 Plymouth Ave N) in North Minneapolis.

Vitals and Shock! Great day at The Ladder

What a great day at The Ladder, wonderful turnout of students and mentors multiple small groups learning and teaching each other all about vital signs, shock , and sepsis!

Breaking into small groups keeps everyone involved and engaged. This small group is learning how to treat someone in the ICU, Intensive Care Unit who has a very bad infection, also known as sepsis, by playing a medical video game.

This small group is learning what “vital signs” are and how to use clinic machines donated by Broadway Family Medicine Clinic, to learn how to measure a patients blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate/pulse, and temperature.  At The Ladder we follow the time honored medical learning practice of “See One, Do One, Teach One” so everybody gets to be hands on in their learning!

July Recap: Surgeries And Sutures!

Medical scholars at July’s session of the Ladder had the opportunity to try their hands at surgery and suturing!

Our youngest scholars focused on learning the finer points of tying off sutures using needle drivers without needles (safety first!) in model biceps. Older scholars had the opportunity to (carefully) suture on model arms with needles.

Scholars then practiced various types of virtual surgery: appendectomy, adenoidectomy and knee replacement.

Tell the young scholars in your life, family, school, class and neighborhood about the Ladder – where they can not only develop academic and career goals for their future, but have a whole lot of fun in the process. Next Session Of The Ladder – July 11th: Surgery and Sutures!

This month we’ll be exploring a topic well known to more senior medical scholars but entirely new as a topic at the Ladder: surgery & sutures – or, to use terminology that’s more widely known outside of medicine, operations and stitches!

surgerySuture

You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the variety of helpers involved in various aspects of surgery (hint – it’s not only physicians/surgeons!), and the specialized tools and procedures used to get into areas of the body requiring surgery, those used to do the work inside the body, and those used to stitch surgical areas back up again.

Bring yourself (but leave your needles and thread at home!), and join us for the next session of the Ladder: Saturday, July 11th at 12:30pm, where we’ll give you hands-on opportunities to learn about surgery and suturing! Our meeting location will be at the UROC building – 2001 Plymouth Ave N (Newton & Plymouth) in north Minneapolis – lunch will be provided!

June Recap: Ears, Sound and Balance

Medical scholars at June’s session learned all about ears, sound and balance. Scholars learned how to use otoscopes to look at the anatomy of the ear…

…and audioscopes – devices used to check hearing function.

Medical scholars learned about use of tuning folks as another simple yet effective means for testing hearing function:

Scholars also learned about how the inner ear is involved in balance, and they had the opportunity to try out a BAPS (Biomechanical Ankle Platform System) board – a tool physical therapists use to help patients regain balance after ankle, knee and hip injuries.

Tell the young scholars in your life, family, school, class and neighborhood about the Ladder – where they can not only develop academic and career goals for their future, but have a whole lot of fun in the process.
