Next Ladder Meeting: Strong Heart, Sick Heart – Listen, Teach and Learn

You see plenty of these kinds of hearts around Valentine’s Day…

artsyHeart

…but what does a real heart, YOUR heart, actually look like? Maybe you’ve seen pics of the human heart, or even had to learn about the heart in school – which looks more like this:

human_heart

But what’s the big deal about your heart anyway – is it really all that important?  Couldn’t you just get along without one? Oh right – without a heart, your blood would just sit there not going anywhere, which yeah – would be a pretty bad thing.

At the next meeting of the Ladder – some of our most knowledgeable Medical Scholars will tell us why the heart really is kind of a big deal, and will teach us ways to find out whether a heart is strong and mighty, or sick, weak and in trouble.

So bring your stethoscope if you’ve got one, or bring a friend if you don’t (or even if you do!), and join us for the next Ladder meeting (lunch will be provided!) on Saturday March 9 at 12:30pm at the UROC building (2001 Plymouth Ave N). The UROC building is reachable by Metro Transit bus routes 19, 32 & 7.

February Ladder meeting recap – the lungs!

At February’s meeting of the Ladder, medical scholars of all ages learned about lungs – how they work, how to find out if they’re working right, and what it sounds and looks like when they’re not working very well.

Before diving into learning about lungs, Medical Scholar Renee introduced us all to what the Ladder is and does, and then shared a quote from Dr. Mae Jemison – the first African American woman in space: “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.”

We broke into groups to eat lunch and talk about a time in each of our lives that we accomplished something that someone (maybe friends, family, teachers or all of the above!) didn’t think we could do. Without exception – every person had an example of something they accomplished that someone in their life didn’t believe they were capable of. It proves Dr. Jemison’s point – that if we limit ourselves to what others think of us, we may never get anywhere or accomplish anything!

Each group then had the opportunity to learn about lungs and ways to check how someone’s lungs are working (and to know if they’re not working very well!).

At one station – medical scholars learned how to use stethoscopes…

Next Ladder Meeting: The Lungs and Lung Stuff!

What do you know about your lungs? Do you use them to eat? Do you hear with them? Use them for walking? Nah – you know what they’re for: breathing!

lungs

Your lungs are 24/7 work horses. Whether you’re biking or playing soccer or basketball or doing your homework or even just sleeping – your lungs are non-stop expanding and contracting in your chest, bringing in the oxygen your body needs and kicking out the leftover carbon dioxide your body doesn’t need.

At our next Ladder meeting we’re going to learn about lungs and lung stuff (there’s a lot of stuff that goes along with the lungs!), including some hands-on learning of medical devices and procedures used to examine lungs and lung function.

So – whether you’re 9, 15, 21, 45 or 99 years old, whether you’re just starting to think about becoming a doctor, you’re already on your way to becoming one, or you’ve been practicing for years – grab your friends and join us (lunch provided!) at The Ladder this coming Saturday Feb 9th at 12:30pm at the UROC building (2001 Plymouth Ave N). The UROC building is reachable by Metro Transit bus routes 19, 32 & 7.

What are The Ladder meetings all about anyway?

Wondering what exactly we do at Ladder meetings?

Twitter_question_mark

All of us who come to The Ladder gatherings are Medical Scholars, regardless of our age or experience level. We share and learn about all of the different types of health care professions possible. Did you know that in addition to doctors and nurses – there’s a whole world of other things you can be in the medical/health care realm?

At The Ladder, we also get to learn about and practice some of the procedures used by physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. At November’s meeting all of us Medical Scholars had the opportunity to learn about and try out some medical devices. Here, one of our Medical Scholars tries out an ophthalmoscope: a device sort of like a cross between a telescope and a microscope that’s used to see the inside of the eyes:

  • Activities and opportunities outside of the monthly Ladder gatherings
  • Resources for you as a Medical Scholar

If you have ideas or suggestions (for the site, for activities or presentations for the Ladder meetings, or really about anything at all) please leave a comment with your suggestions!

Stay tuned for more good things to come, then be sure to be at our next meeting (February 9th @12:30pm), and bring your friends!
